Numbulwar
Numbulwar is a remote Aboriginal community located on Nunggubuyu Country on the Gulf of Carpentaria in south-east Arnhem Land. The community is approximately nine hours from Katherine via the Roper Highway and is seasonally cut off during the wet season (November to June), when flooded rivers restrict road access and mail plane becomes the only way in and out.
The Numburindi OpShop plays an important role in supporting local families to access affordable clothing and household items without the need for long, costly trips outside the community. Having a local OpShop is especially critical during periods of isolation in the wet season.
The OpShop is located at Numbulwar School and is managed by Vaalda and Sheila. Previously volunteer-run, the OpShop is now reopening through a partnership between Numbulwar School, Numburindi Corporation Limited, and the Remote OpShop Project.
Operating as a community-led, not-for-profit OpShop, all profits from the Numburindi OpShop stay in Numbulwar and are reinvested directly into school and community programs, strengthening local ownership, access, and community wellbeing.
