Nganmarriyanga Opshop
Nganmarriyanga, also known as Palumpa Community, is located 353 km southwest of Darwin in the West Daly region and is home to approximately 400 people. The locals here are warm, welcoming, and friendly, with a deep love for fishing, footy, and family. However, like many remote communities, Nganmarriyanga faces significant challenges in accessing affordable clothing and household items.
Our community has been fortunate to receive generous donations, which have made a meaningful difference in the lives of many. As we move forward, we warmly welcome donations of essential items to continue supporting those in need.
“As a very remote community in the West Daly region, we have no access to affordable clothing or home items. At our little local store, a single sheet set of poor quality sells for over $70, and a towel for over $40. An infant’s onesie costs over $30, and nappies and toiletries are also highly priced with limited options. With most of our locals using a Basic Card, online shopping for more affordable items is simply not an option.
The Nganmarriyanga Op Shop began in 2021 as a small initiative and quickly gained traction, as the need for affordable clothing and other essentials became apparent. Every day, locals ask if new donations have arrived or if we will be selling that day. I’ve been able to gift many items to children, the elderly, and families going through tough times. Some parents have even told me their child couldn’t attend school because they didn’t have anything to wear.
As a teacher, being able to bridge this gap by providing quality clothing that ensures children can attend school is invaluable. The concept of a central reuse hub that specifically caters to remote communities like ours is something I wholeheartedly endorse.”
— Kellie Bithell, Senior Teacher, Nganmarriyanga School
