Rockhole
Rockhole Community is a small, close-knit Aboriginal community located in Central Australia, near Cossack, within the Central Desert region. Home to approximately 100 people, Rockhole is strongly grounded in culture, kinship, and community leadership, with a shared commitment to caring for children, families, and community life.
Like many remote communities, Rockhole faces challenges related to distance, limited access to services, and the high cost of living. Despite this, the community remains deeply connected to Country and continues to work collectively to create local solutions to local challenges.
The Rockhole Remote OpShop is a community-driven initiative that reflects this proactive approach. Operated as a volunteer-run, not-for-profit OpShop, it aims to improve access to affordable clothing, toys, and essential household items while generating local funds to support community-chosen priorities, including cultural, sporting, and community activities.
The OpShop operates from under the large central shed located in the middle of Rockhole, making it easily accessible for community members. Local volunteers are responsible for sorting, storing, and selling donated goods, with opening days and times determined by community availability and demand.
All profits from the Rockhole Remote OpShop are reinvested directly back into the community, strengthening local ownership, resilience, and collective wellbeing.
