Mantamaru (also known as Jameson) is a remote Aboriginal community in the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku, located about 125 km east of Warburton in Western Australia’s Central Ranges region, near the base of the Jameson Range.
Mantamaru translates in the Ngaanyatjarra language as ‘black ground’, describing the tiny dark stones around the Jameson Range.
The community population fluctuates, with around 60–80 people living in Jameson in recent years.
Mantamaru is part of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, where the predominant language spoken is Ngaanyatjarra (with other Western Desert dialects also spoken through family connections).
The Mantamaru Op Shop is a community-led initiative that supports local families by improving access to affordable clothing and household items, while creating opportunities for skills development in retail, sorting, and basic money management.
Op Shop proceeds are reinvested into community priorities, such as supporting local activities, community events, or practical items that benefit families.
