Problems Worth Solving

Remote First Nations communities across Australia continue to face persistent barriers to accessing essential items such as clothing, shoes, linen, and household goods. In many places, the cost of living is significantly higher than in urban areas, while distance, limited transport infrastructure, and seasonal isolation make access even more difficult. This lack of access affects health, comfort, dignity, and participation in everyday life.

At the same time, Australia is facing a growing textile waste crisis, with vast volumes of usable clothing and household goods ending up in landfill each year. Remote OpShop Project exists at the intersection of these two challenges: unmet need in remote communities, and excess in urban Australia.

Hear from our patron and board member, Beverley-Ann Lumpton on why opshops matter.

Our Response

Access to Affordable Essentials:

We establish community-owned opshops and Reuse Hubs to supply high-quality, essential items at affordable prices, significantly reducing the cost of living in remote communities.

Empowerment through Enterprise:

We create community-owned opshops to generate employment, support self-sufficiency, and enhance economic participation. This fosters empowerment and self-determination while reducing dependency on external control.

Innovative Infrastructure Solutions:

We implement containerised, solar-powered opshops to bridge infrastructure gaps and ensure reliable access to goods and services.

Place-Based Enterprise Training:

We offer experiential small business training within communities to build entrepreneurial capacity and support the development of Indigenous enterprises.

Reconciliation in Action:

We promote meaningful cross-cultural connections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, fostering engagement, mutual understanding, respect, and active reconciliation.
